Introductions

In the past you have:
  • started with summarizing background information about the text
  • written a thesis with three distinct parts that included organizing information for the rest of the essay

This year we're going to focus on:
  • establishing the specific topic of the essay and drawing the readers toward a thesis within that topic
  • writing a thesis that is authentic to what you want to say and overwhelmingly interpretive
  • getting right to the heart of the paper

Conclusions

In the past you have:
  • restated your thesis, sometimes verbatim
  • summarized your subtopics
  • ended on a meaningful sentence that finalizes the essay

This year we're going to focus on:
  • relating our thesis to the larger world
  • answering the question "so what?"
  • reminding the reader of the thesis, but not restating it
  • ending on a meaningful sentence that is both finalizing to the thesis of the essay but expansive to the world at large
